Greymouth
In pre-European times Maori passed through Greymouth on their travels to
find greenstone. In the 1860s the gold rush drew people to nearby Hokitika
and to Greymouth.
Greymouth is the major town on the West Coast, and offers a range of
motels, backpacker hostels and holiday parks, and small specialty and
tourist shops and national chain stores. You may like to take a tour of
Monteith's Brewing Company or try the famous local beer at one of the
restaurants and bars.
Only minutes from the town centre are Greymouth's Art Gallery, History
House and the walk on the flood wall which was built after the Grey River
overflowed its banks and flooded part of the town centre.
Greymouth is also the terminus for the famous Tranz Alpine train from
Christchurch and a departure point for coaches and shuttles taking visitors
on tours to other places on the West Coast and to Nelson.
